Is LeanOn worth it? Honest answers before you pay

The questions people ask before their first paid session — answered plainly, including when LeanOn is not the right choice.

In short: LeanOn connects you with a real, screened peer listener in India for a private text or voice conversation, without an appointment. Try the first 5 minutes free; after that, 15 minutes is ₹160 in India (US$10 abroad), you pay only for the minutes you use, and unused wallet balance is refundable. It is peer support, not therapy.

Is it real?

Is LeanOn legit?

Yes. LeanOn (leanon.app) is a peer-support service run from India. You talk one to one, by text or voice, with a real person — not a bot. Every listener applies in writing, passes a screening quiz, completes a live selfie check and is reviewed by LeanOn before taking any session. Payments go through Razorpay, and unused wallet balance can be refunded on request.

Am I talking to a real person or AI?

A real person, always. LeanOn has no AI listeners, and no AI reads or analyses your conversations.

Who are the listeners?

Ordinary adults in India with lived experience of what they talk about — breakups, family pressure, loneliness, burnout, grief, anxiety. They are screened peers, not therapists or counsellors, and they do not diagnose or give medical advice.

Is it worth the money?

How much does it cost?

Your first 5 minutes are free, once per account. After that, in India, a text session with a ₹10/min listener is ₹160 for 15 minutes, ₹310 for 30 or ₹460 for 45 (including a flat ₹10 platform fee); voice is ₹5/min more, and some listeners charge more — the exact price is shown before you start. Outside India, sessions start at US$10 for 15 minutes, US$15 for 30 and US$20 for 45. No subscription.

Is it worth paying compared with therapy?

They are different things. A therapist treats mental health conditions and costs more per session. LeanOn is for when you need to be heard tonight — a fight, a breakup, loneliness, a heavy day — by someone who gets it, without an appointment. Many people use it while waiting for therapy, or for things they do not need therapy for. Use the free 5 minutes to see if it feels right before you pay anything.

What if it does not help?

You can end a session whenever you want and you pay only for the minutes you used; the rest of the held amount goes back to your wallet straight away. If no listener accepts your request, nothing is charged.

Is it private?

Will my family or anyone I know find out?

The listener sees only the name you choose — never your phone number. Nothing is posted anywhere. You can use a first name or a nickname.

Are my conversations recorded or read?

Voice calls are not recorded. Text messages are stored securely; only authorised LeanOn administrators can open them, for example to review a reported or safety-flagged session. LeanOn is private, but not "100% anonymous" — your phone number is verified so that everyone on the platform is a real person.

Will the listener judge me?

Listening without judging is the whole job, and listeners are screened for it. If anything feels wrong, end the session and report it to LeanOn.

How does it work?

Do I need to book an appointment?

No. Open leanon.app/talk, choose text or voice and tap what is on your mind; LeanOn asks a listener who is online now and moves to the next one if they cannot answer within about 30 seconds. Or browse listener profiles at leanon.app/browse and pick someone yourself. Listeners are in India, so availability follows Indian time.

Can I talk in my language, or choose who I talk to?

Often, yes. Listeners can offer English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, Urdu — filter by language on leanon.app/browse to see who speaks yours. Each profile shows the listener's name, languages and the topics they talk about, so you can choose someone you are comfortable with. You can also book the same listener again from their profile.

How do I pay?

Top up your LeanOn wallet (₹200, ₹500, ₹1,000, ₹2,000) through Razorpay; a small payment-gateway charge is added at checkout. The session amount is held only when you send a request, returned in full if nobody accepts, and anything left in your wallet can be refunded on request from the wallet page.

When is LeanOn the wrong choice?

When should I not use LeanOn?

If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24/7) or NIMHANS on 080-46110007 now. LeanOn is also not for diagnosis, medication, couples therapy or legal advice — for those, see a qualified professional. LeanOn is peer support alongside professional care, never instead of it.

Your first 5 minutes are free — enough to know if it feels right.
